You might now be comparing apples to oranges.... Pi kernel is using the Realtek "vendor" driver. (The driver that actually works.) I suspect your Ubuntu kernel will have been using the "upstream" driver. You'd be lucky to stay connected to an AP for more than 5 mins with the upstream driver, given the absolute best circumstances. And it has performance issues, even if you do manage to connect to an AP, which might explain the slow page loading. Still doesn't explain why the dongle didn't just work with Pico.
