I have tried Max2Play a while back just to see what it is and what
features it has. 
Honestly, I very much prefer piCorePlayer because PCP is build for the
purpose of being a music player. Max2Play tries to be everything and
that makes it big and clumsy. Also, the user interface is not very user
friendly. 

If you're using an RPI with an external drive it is very easy to
disconnect the drive from the PI and connect it to a laptop or computer.
Then use the laptop or computer to copy music onto the drive. And
finally reconnect the drive to the RPI. 
I know Samba would be the icing on the cake for such process, but if I
had to choose between Max2Play and piCorePlayer... well, that is a
no-brainer.
