If the players attached to the LMS are not playing, and you are not
using the web interface, then it might be fine.    But the LMS cache and
prefs are stored on a physical drive.

Many ways to do the job.

1)On the main menu in pCP, there is a shutdown button.
2) Stopping LMS from the LMS page
3) Interface a gpio button that triggers the command   
"/usr/local/bin/pcp sd"

There are even some power boards that will cut the power to the system
once it has shutdown.
