Choose a static IP outside the DHCP range.

If for example his router is 192.168.x.1 then I usually opt for
192.168.x.254 - the last usable IP

The Pi would be
IP 192.168.x.254
Netmask 255.255.255.0
Gateway 192.168.x.1
DNS 8.8.8.8 - this will almost always work better than the router
address
DNS2 8.8.4.4

If you do this remember that when you click submit on the Pi if your PC
isn't in the same subnet (192.168.x.) then you will lose connection. To
get it back temporarily give your PC a fixed address in the same subnet
as the Pi but don't forget to switch back to DHCP afterwards.
