I have seen various discussions and remarks related to pCP and security
on the boards here. My impression is that installing updates is one of
the very few (and very limited) potential security risks. So maybe a
good strategy would be to prepare an SD that is fully functional and
then just don't do any updates ever, unless it's needed to address a bug
or an issue that affects your user. I think that would be the most
stable version, it does a clean reboot every time it powers up. 

Also, setting a static IP on the router in stead of pCP would mean that
in principle your friend would never ever have to make any changes in
the pCP settings. And probably the easiest is to ship the Pi with a
fully configured USB stick (move the LMS files there as well) so your
friend only needs to copy the music files in the right directory.. 

If you choose that setup you could even consider shipping a backup SD
card and a backup USB stick at the same time...
