I use a Linux server with files on Qnap via NFS successfully and have done for years.
By default the NFS mount is root.root I cant look now but if I recall correctly the user that runs LMS on the Linux box is indeed squeezeboxserver but critically it is in the root group and this is what gives it the necessary access rights On the Qnap its admin.admin but that equates to root.root in UID.GID terms hence it works.
