One thing to check, with my situation (pi with USB HDD, cache on HDD) what would happen is the "mount" would get corrupted/disconnected/something. The Pi no longer "saw" the drive (so, in my case (cache on HDD) LMS could not find the cache). I would then go into the pcp UI, and the drive "looked" like it was mounted. So, I would uncheck-apply-check-apply, and all would be well. One way I could tell it was not mounted is by using samba and a network location on a PC, try to access that location would fail. There has been some discussion on drive spin up time, especially with older USB HDD. The thought being that the drive is not ready when pcp tries to re-establish the mount. Perhaps with your NAS, if it's being power restored at the same time as your pi (not a usual occurrence, only after cut, right?), and it is not "ready" when the pcp tries to reestablish the mount. There is a setting in pcp to extend the time, "wait USB" pcp UI->main page->(beta functions) extras->bootcodes (tab)->wait usb - increase this value. Also, to add to Gary's comment on SD, Even if it's not required, you probably want to stop LMS from reading/writing cache/prefs, especially if you do a "whole disk" backup, which is what I prefer. That way, you can just write the whole card from the image you backed up.
