Apparently, and this is not based on fact, only hearsay and experience
of 9.2 users, OS 9.2.x was optimised to run on a G3 or higher machine by
pulling most of the support for older hardware and chipsets. This
explains why it runs fine on the last line of 604e machines but starts
to cough and lose it's feet on older machines, especially clones. I
don't know how rue that is.
