Does anyone REALLY know why there is this loss of sound problem? I have received a lot of misinformation on the subject and seen much posted here. I have an 8500 mobo with a Sonnet G4, some have said it is partially due to Sonnet's and other upgrade makers, possibly, G4 upgrade cards. While many with the G3 upgrades don't have the sound stuttering or disappearance problems. Others have said this is due to the older analog based audio hardware on the older Mac motherboards that OS X was never built to get along with when the newer Apple hardware switched over to digital I/O. I'm assuming this is some sort of hardware limitation. My upgraded box is basically useless for OS X as no amount of tinkering with settings, as many swear by but I have found useless, will get my audio to work. I've had to go back to OS 9 on this box for over a year now. Does anyone know if a third party sound driver or the available pci audio cards would be a real work around for those of us stuck with no audio?
I had this on my 9500/10.2.6 setup as well. I actually timed it and found that I would lose sound from all sources after about half an hour. Even if the system was streaming mp3's when this time was reached, the audio on the receiving system would get cut off as well. As it was a reoccurring effect, I eventually traced it to the system settings relating to the power-saving preferences I had. I found that if I set the System sleep setting to 'never', the sound would continue 'normally' without any cutoffs. Except for iTunes, I still have to adjust the volume via external speakers for any system sounds/alerts. The volume for iTunes can be adjusted normally from within the program. The sleep settings for the Display and hard drive don't seem to affect the audio, so I left the as I had them before. Check into that and see if that helps you out.

As mentioned on the XPF website, you should always have system sleep set to never on unsupported machines. Sleep does not function under OSX and has been known to cause problems, some much more damaging than loss of sound. HardDrive corruption was a big one.
