Does anyone REALLY know why there is this loss of sound problem? I have received a lot of misinformation on the subject and seen much posted here. I have an 8500 mobo with a Sonnet G4, some have said it is partially due to Sonnet's and other upgrade makers, possibly, G4 upgrade cards. While many with the G3 upgrades don't have the sound stuttering or disappearance problems. Others have said this is due to the older analog based audio hardware on the older Mac motherboards that OS X was never built to get along with when the newer Apple hardware switched over to digital I/O. I'm assuming this is some sort of hardware limitation. My upgraded box is basically useless for OS X as no amount of tinkering with settings, as many swear by but I have found useless, will get my audio to work. I've had to go back to OS 9 on this box for over a year now. Does anyone know if a third party sound driver or the available pci audio cards would be a real work around for those of us stuck with no audio?

This thing about turning off the sleep may quite possibly be it.

I have a G4/800 Sonnet card in this 9600 running iTunes 4 on 10.2.6 and have absolutely no sound problems. BUT, I have never used the energy saver as well and have it all set to 'never.'

I do use the screen saver in OSX and have it set to password with no problems.....
