Scott, like others have said, the answer is 'it depends'.

I've upgraded a 9500 with a Sonnet G4, more memory, an ATA controler card
(the second one; the SIIG card never did work properly and I've given up
entirely on it), big ATA drives, etc.

If you like to tinker with computers, roll your own, like to spend money,
etc., then go for the upgrades.

If you intend to actaully do something important, or somethink work-related,
then don't waste your time or money. You'll be much, MUCH happier that you
choose to just spend a few more dollars (literally, not much more) and pick
up an early G3 or G4 machine, and run OSX without the hack, wonderful as it
is, of XPostFacto.

I try to use my 9500 machine for my work, and I've wasted far too much time
tracking down a host of various problems and incompatibilities, and too much
money that would have been better spent on a Mac that is already OSX
compatible. I now regret my choice to upgrade, and wish I'd spent the money
for a slightly newer machine. Just two-cents worth from someone that has
gone the upgrade route. It made sense maybe a year or more ago, but not any
longer, IMHO.
