Hi all,

My 7600 with 350 megs of RAM, a MaxPowr 400 G3 card, and a Voodoo3 card installed in one of the PCI slots successfully booted into Jaguar's installer this evening with nary a hiccup. There was a lot of console stuff at first, but the OSX CD's splash and progress bar came up.

Now I am impatient as I have no ATA card OR a SCSI drive large enough. I even have a spare 40 gig IDE drive just WAITING for installation in my 7600! Argh.

Video performance was sluggish when it came to scrolling, or dragging a window under the installer's OS. I tried with 4 megs of VRAM on the logic board as well. Performance was a little more sluggish. I expected a larger improvement with the 16 megs of RAM that the Voodoo3 offers. Why's that?

Because OS X **needs** hardware acceleration for it's GUI to run well. The only supported cards are PCI ATI Rage128, Radeon Mac Ed., Radeon 7000 Mac Ed.; all Mac AGP cards, and some minimal (but good!) acceleration for the ATI Rage Pro chipset (10.1.5 and later). Nothing else. All other video is done by the CPU only and it doesn't matter what amount of VRAM you have because there is no hardware acceleration.
