Subject: Setting CPU speed

I've a ZIF carrier and a 550 G4 in my PowerTower Pro. I heard that
you can get away with running it at 450 and setting the bus speed as
50 (x9 multiplier). Should I do this or run it at 405 with the
actual bus speed of 45?

What's this actual bus speed of 45 business?? Are you mistaking the bus speed of your machine as being what it is with the cpu that came with the machine? Likely a 604e cpu? The bus speed is set by the cpu you are using up to the limits of the motherboard of course. The basic rated speed for your machine is apox 50 MHz bus You are also in luck as the Power Pro machine has been tested as being able to run at 60 MHz with rarely any problems. This is the best that any Old World Mac other then the Beige G3 can do. Your machine is unlikely to have any problems running that G4 550 at 500MHz with a bus of 55.6 MHz . You may well be able to do even better then that. I wouldn't be surprised if it runs fine with a bus of 60MHz and 540MHz cpu speed. That would be running at the top limits which some machines will be better then other at doing. The things to watch out for are over heating if fans not running correctly or heat sink not installed correctly. Also the faster the CPU and or bus speed the more likely you are to see issues with older slower ram chips. It is likely any 70ns speed ram will cause issues. Chances are that is the speed of the ram which came with your machine when it was new. I have been running a G3 500 MHz carrier card setup at 550 MHz at a bus speed of 55MHz for like 2 years now. (My machine will run as fast as 61 MHz bus but I feel safer backing off a bit) This is in a UMAX clone S900/J700. The ram issue was really the only problem. This was hard to figure out as ram was/ is fine as long as I stay in OS 9.x . OSX is much more demanding of the RAM especially at higher speeds. Best of luck Will
