I had this happen on a 7600/G3/350 with a Tempo 100 ATA card. It was the partition I was installing to. When I treated it like a beige G3 and installed to the first partition all went well.

Iam having trouble getting X installed on my 8600. It worked before,
but I added a bigger hard drive and am trying to get a fresh start.
   I dissconnected everything except the HD(ID 1) and the CD-ROM(ID 3).
The CD-ROM is terminated.
