Does anyone have any info on the ATi Radeon 9200 128 MB PCI Mac version video card that was quietly announced at MWSF? Will it be or is the PC version compatible with our "unsupported" systems and if so do any of you folks have speculation on possible video performance improvements or pitfalls over say the 7000 series?

I've been watching this with interest. All we know is ATI is planning a 128 Radeon 9000 based Mac PCI card. Also that it was shown at Mac World. So we don't even know what model number it will be just the above info. There is lots of interest but no info yet from ATI. My guess is it will be over priced for most people running older machines. I can't see any reason for this new card unless it is more powerful. Just checked a couple of website including ATI and no info yet.
Steve,
Firstly this is a little off topic but would welcome others observations - direct message if necessary - list is quiet so hope you all don't mind.......
I know nothing of the 9200 but have an interesting observation regarding the 7000 (Mac edition) in 9600. I recently upgraded to a G5 and have been canablising parts from 9600 to put into Dads G3 B&W 450. I swapped his ATI Rage 128 for my Radeon 7000 and believe it or not the Rage card seems faster in 9600 (under OS 9.1 at least - haven't tried X). The basis for this is using an analogue TV tuner card to display TV image to screen - I can run a larger screen size smoother than I could on 7000??! However 7000 upgrade over Twin Turbo was massive particularly in X
Again just a simple test under OS 9, I couldn't run Marine Aquarium without stutters (with either Twin or 7000) but under X.2 I could run it with all 8 fish swimming, Lighting, Bubbles etc and it was smooth as silk using 7000 (without PCI Extreme hack either)
It seems that Radeon is beneficial if most time is being spent in X BUT Rage seems better if more time spent in OS 9
What are other people seeing?
This is by no means exhaustive testing but a casual observation. Similar things seem to happen even on B&W with card in 66mhz Slot - ie little slower under 9 but much better under X. Yes I believve I have the latest update from ATI website and have followed tips from xlr8 website
Hope above all makes sense
Cheers
Simon
The reason the ATI 7000 runs faster in OSX. OSX includes the latest drivers for the ATI cards including the 7000. The 7000 series card isn't officially supported under Mac OS's older then 9.2.1. Which means you most likely don't have the correct drivers for the card if your running it with OS 9.1 . Which explains why your seeing the card as running less well then it should. OS 9.1 is the last OS to run on Old World Mac's without using hacks to install and run. So you need the Open GL extensions from OS 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 in order for the card to run at it's best in OS 9.1. Another members testing shows the card will even run well with OS 8.6 with these extensions. You can get them from some ne runing the newer OS or install 9.2.2 using OS 9 helper. The OS 9.2.1 and 9.2.2 updates are free downloads from Apple if your running 9.1. (even 9.1 is a free update if your running 9.0.4) You also need the Oct 2002 ATI Retail update from ATI for OS 9.x. Installing this update in OSX is a mistake as OSX from 10.2 onward has the latest ATI drivers which are newer then this update.
In my machine the ATI 7000 runs well in both OS 9.x and OSX. OS 9.x is faster then OSX on nearly any machine they both run on.Still after getting used to it I live in OSX and no longer use OS 9. Hope this helps answer your question. Will S
