Gary,

Again thanks for the email - also sorry to discuss OS 9 issues on this list if it goes on much more we should take it offline...

You can use Tombe Viewer to extract said version of Open GL, and for that matter OpenTransport as well and drop them into OS9.1 and they'll run fine. I did actually go to 9.2x and machine was more flakey than under 9.1 so I went back (now that sort of stuff, going backwards OS wise, is way harder in X) - again it could be my hardware and or software config I have.

Cheers

Simon

you actually need to be running 9.2.1 or 9.2.2 to be using the latest and greatest ATI Radeon drivers, because they require OpenGL 1.2.2. if you're running 9.1, you should be able to download the updates to make it to 9.2.1 or 9.2.2. You'll have to use the same OS9 Helper to help you install them, but it should work with no issues. I have OS 9.2.2 on my 9600, and it performs well. I noticed, with my Rage128-based card (Nexus 128) that there wass a significant performance improvement to be had between 9.1 and the stock drivers and 9.2 and the latest retail drivers, particularly WRT OpenGL performance. YMMV, but I'd say it was worth it. Besides, I understand the finder was tweaked in 9.2 to be more responsive, and apparently OpenTransport performance is much better as well.

Thanks for reply Will, but I actually have the Hybrid/Hacked version of 9.1 running, as well as retail update you mention. It's quite weird really, as I wouldn't have expected too much speed difference on that level of system. I also have the later version of Open Transport - which is faster than 9.1's version too, so I guess it all should be there?!

I have even gone to the level of running Newers software for the sonnet G3 card I have as this allows me to disable M/b cache on 89600 (mine isn't a mach 5 version)

Also noted was that the 7000 is much better in X than Rage card, even with out PCI extreme hack - need to keep dad's machine happy as he uses it for business as well as "pleasure" (keep it clean - not that sort either!!)

As I stated it's only a very casual observation with only a few pieces of software/hardware and may be just the way machine is configured. If I can be bothered or have the time I'll do some more testing but alas trusty 9600 is now only really used to allow me to print to Appletalk printer via LocalTalk Bridge and to use my SCSI 200 MB zip - everything else is done on G5, even Newton connection!!

Cheers

Simon
