Thanks for summing this up really well. It's not just about yet
another new standard, they all define new protocols and approaches to
designing clean, efficient, and flexible user interfaces that just
aren't possible with todays standards just like CSS/XHTML and AJAX did
when their time came.

Personally, I will likely have my run with WPF (which I have slowly
been following over the last couple years) on the desktop application
side when the time comes, and it's unfortunate that I still don't see
anything equivalent coming out for Linux desktop applications (other
than resorting to Java, which I refuse to even consider). It appears
that Linux will fall short in this area for a while to come.
