honestly, become a part of the web culture. watch trends. join
myspace*, facebook, del,icio,us, flickr, digg... read the big bloggers
(guy kawasaki, lifehacker, seth godin, boing boing, om malik), not
necessarily for standards commentary, but for trends and opinions and
examples. find out who is in the "pagerank 10" club. check out their
pages, they are prob'ly doing something right. check out the css zen
garden for inspiration, a list apart for application, w3 for
validation.**

that should get you started :)

*please don't ever, ever, ever use myspace for inspiration, standards,
