Sorry, I should have explained. When studying nonprofits (or the third
sector, or whatever), any non-governmental organization that does not
operate for profit is considered a nonprofit. This includes the
roughly 30 types of organizations defined in section 501 of the IRS
code (charities, unions, professional organizations, sports leagues,
etc. -- yes, the NFL is a nonprofit organization), as well as free
associations -- groups of people who organize themselves for some
purpose, but do not necessarily legally incorporate (user groups,
community watch groups, clubs, etc.).

When I say nonprofit, most people think of a 501(c)3, but our ragged
band would be considered a nonprofit -- in an academic sense. Blame it
on de Tocqueville.
