Agreed on not stuffing books. Every time I get a magazine I go through
and tear out all the cards and front-to-back ads without even reading
them (unless the ads are really fabulous and then I only look at them to
see how they did it.) And while uphpu is noble cause, you know you
wouldn't dream of email spamming about uphpu, so I don't think book
spamming (especially without permission) would be any more appropriate.
However I do think asking if we could leave a few cards never hurt
anyone (the worst they could do is say no). It would also be nice for
us to have some cards to carry with us and give people when we meet
them, or to give to professors to give to their students, etc. Might be
good to look up local php web hosts and offer them some cards for their
clients. We're constantly referring people out to their local php user
groups (and sometimes to this one, right Jay? :-))
I know overnightprints.com has a deal right now for $10 off. With the
coupon I just had a short run of 100 CMYK/CMYK cards + trimmed corners &
uv coating printed and shipped for under $17. I've used them before &
they do a great job. We could get enough cards to give a dozen to
anyone who wants to take them. Maybe make them useful by putting some
tips on the back, though I don't know what tips you'd use. Or
programmer jokes maybe, I dunno, make them worth keeping though.
Here's another thought. If you want more php users, why not try to help
the newbies? I know I read alot of posts, especially when it comes to
jobs and the market, about the problem with php being that there are too
many newbies who think they're programmers. How about instead of
intimidating them, help them? I know you do already in the list alot of
times. I would -love- to see a breakout group at meetings for newbies,
with emphasis on best practices.
