i agree to moving forward. however, i think a documented work-around to this issue should accompany the ga release.

as for "What happened to the work-around of using two JDKs, one to run the IDE and another to build/run uPortal?", i have yet to get this to work in the mac environment. the mac likes to manage the available jre implementations, so having two instances of the same version co-habitating is somewhat tricky.

erik (or anyone else), do you have any suggestions on how to install and manage two instances of the same jre on a mac?

thanks, tim

uPortal 2.5.x also had to create a uPortal specific patch of xalan 2.6, in order to fix a critical memory leak (if I remember correctly). While that got us by, it was never the desired approach to have a patched version of the xalan libraries.

I believe even with the problems with netbeans, xalan 2.7 is a better library for uPortal 2.6.0 to use.

Timothy,

I hear your pain, and hope that by welcoming a couple Netbeans users closer into the cadre of uPortal developers understanding and support for using the IDE will improve.

However, I think there are important ways in which the Xalan 2.7.0 requirement is a feature rather than an impediment - uPortal is very XML/XSLT heavy. Adopting the latest and greatest mainstream XML libraries we can is a sound move.

I'd suggest that this issue not impede 2.6.0 GA and become instead a follow-on issue, likely one addressed by better doco on how to develop uPortal using various IDEs.

Andrew

the only major impediment that i see is the xalan 2.7.0 requirement.

it is a problem for those of us using netbeans for development

there may be a work-around, but i have yet to find one that is desirable...

uPortal developers,

I write to call the question of releasing uPortal 2.6.0 general audience <http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/UPC/2.6.0>, the further incremental improvement on the available RC2 <http://www.ja-sig.org/wiki/display/UPC/2.6.0+RC2>, as staged in SVN as

https://www.ja-sig.org/svn/up2/tags/rel-2-6-0-GA/

Releasing 2.6.0 GA creates a maintenance branch for backwards-compatible patches towards 2.6.1, 2.6.2, etc. and frees the HEAD for evolutionary work.

With Eric's recent burst of activity to tie off niggling remaining issues, I think we've gotten what we're going to get out of an RC series on this and need to put this binary out there and start work towards a 2.6.1 etc.

+1 to release 2.6.0 GA.

Andrew
