For your information, I have sent following e-mail to Altera and entered
to their online contact form (it is not easy to find relevant e-mail to
Altera company, though). I hope they will respond.

However, in my oppinion, the licensing is clear and there is no obstacle
between Altera's code and GPLv2.

Greetings,
Marek

Subject: Altera Jam Player license -- suppose it is GPLv2 compatible

Ladies and gentlemen,

with a great pleasure, we have discovered Altera Jam Player, the JEDEC STAPL
format interpreter with source code offered at your website.
The software has a great potential to become widespread, if several people
would take care of its further development.

My colleague Michael (see Cc:) has ported your player (the altered version,
derived by Actel company) and connected it with a well-known JTAG master
implementation, open-source software called UrJTAG <http://urjtag.org/>. It
contains several very well done back-ends for a lot of different JTAG
hardware. E.g. we use it among others with your Altera USB Blaster for
years.

This software junction has been considered to be a good idea by some people
of the community. So the developers are willing to adopt Altera's Jam Player
into UrJTAG mainline, what would be a marvelous step in further development
of both Altera Jam Player, as well as the UrJTAG and possibly other
open-source software.

Lots of Altera Jam Player bugs may get fixed (yesterday I have busted one
very nasty, around waiting loops), maybe the software will then be pushed by
someone to become fully JEDEC compliant.

* The question is, whether the Altera license for Jam Player *is* compatible
with GNU General Public License version 2 (GPLv2). In my oppinion, it is
compatible, since all the copyright, Altera authorship information and
propagation as well as warranty disclaimer would be preserved. See end of
the following discussion:
http://tinyurl.com/48geznl

However, I would like to have the thing confirmed directly by you before we
suggest to officially join the UrJTAG and Altera Jam Player.

Thank you for your great software.

Best regards,
Marek Peca
