Whew! It took forever to figure out, but I finally stumbled across the right combination of image compression, base64 encoding and required properties that need to be communicated over the socket and it seems to be working.
I was surprised that I was able to get this to work, though, with just the paintCompression and imageData properties, and that that value of the image itself was not required.
