When you make the hairs too thin they won't show up because they are smaller
then one pixel, the fuzzy look might be caused by antialiasing. I think you
have to find a diameter that looks like hair, rather than creating real
hair.

You also could try to use the render scanline option instead of ray traced
nurbs. It's much faster and because the objects are rendered as flat lines
you don't get the shading problem of round objects, that because of the dark
side will look even thinner.
