Matthias and all,

"It's the non-linear workflow, and the particle effects in Houdini. "

As a point of debate - I sometimes get the impression that certain quarters of the RS community frown upon other RS users who may be using anything other than RS to do 3D work with. As is the case in most 3D environments - outside of RS - their is huge INTER-OPERABILITY going on. With alot of the other apps this is being helped along with attention to import/export features and plugins. For example Lightwave ==> xstream ==> Vue Infinite. This allows VUE to be integrated completely into Lightwave. Obviously in the past FBX [ due in RS v6 I think ] has provided other apps with a way of porting anim data back and forth.

My rant has always been RSes lack of INTEROPERABILITY - effectively only one real PRACTICAL way out / in and that is OBJ [ I know 3ds etc ] . RS is a traditional 3D app - model, texture, lighting, anim, render - but these days some new apps have arisen which handle SPECIALIST areas. For example MESSIAH, Character Animation mainly, as is the case with MOTIONBUILDER. VUE / VUE INFINITE, TERRAGEN, BRYCE - Vegetation/world type software. Deep Paint 3D - paint and texture. Now also we have the rise of MODELLING APPs which cater for Sculpting and displacement of hi poly models only [ render / anim elsewhere ] - ZBRUSH, MUDBOX, SILO.

I can only imagine that it would enrich RSes user base and RS itself if -

FIRST - all its core functionality is cleared of any bugs [ if any ] as a point of concentration [ I know this one will cause screams of derision and disagreement :) ], and areas like animation / character animation are brought up to the level of other 3D apps out their

AND SECOND - that RS has native import / export in alot of the above to make it easier for RS users to add these SPECIALIST Apps to the RS workflow.

Read through www.cgtalk.com - anyday and find that other all round 3D apps are embracing specialist apps by the truck load rather than ignoring them. I personally think it is folly for any all round 3D app to try and be all things to all 3Ders. Impossible. Also that it is folly to try and add every feature imaginable when other apps do the same better and specifically.

On a final note - an app that is kind of trying the latter - BLENDER, with its recent ver 2.43 release - is interesting to watch. Not alone is it a traditional 3D app, but also a COMPOSITOR and VIDEO EDITOR and UV UNWRAPPER. AND I stress a very good UV APP on its own. I spent about an hour and a half going through the user interface tute video's and found this apps interface not as daunting as I was told it was. That besides I dont see any reason why PARTS OF THIS APP [ the video editor, the Compositor, the UV FUNCTIONALITY for example ] cannot be added to the REALSOFT workflow by users. For example - with the UV UNWRAP function - in with OBJ RS Model, unwrap, into paint app, create the texture over the saved unwrapped image, back into RS and texture this new material. This as an alternative to the paid for apps like UVUNWRAP. [ Yes, I have found issues with RSes UV system - maybe its my stupidity - if so fine, but inconsistent results occurring particularly in the UVSET function with hardened edges etc ] Jeez lads ITS FREE and these areas do not interfere with RS, they will enhance the final project surely.

And Matthias - if you have ever gotten over the BLENDER interface - it has an NLA system and NODES and in my opinion some excellent Character Animation tools now integrated in v2.43. I have been doodling with Blender AND Realsoft - back and forth - OBJ at the mo. I look forward maybe to a day when better communication in and out of RS is possible on the model, texture, lighting, anim data front.

And of course maybe I will NOW eat the whole humble pie because all the above and more are being addressed in the imminent release of RS v6. If so I will gladly eat this pie. Now lets see how quiet the list is - nothing like a good debate :)

Cheers Lads
Aidan

RS was and is a great piece of software in my opinion,
and even if you don't like it Garry ;-), I do not plan a
runaway from RS.
