...to Commodore C64, the place it probably started for some of us. According to the news it is today precicely 25 years since the first Commodore C64 hit the stores. Time is precious, and getting aware that 25 years has passed since it all began, I guess I'm getting kind of into a hurry :-) God I feel old, LOL!
Hi Karl, 25 years!! Yes, time flies (and the older you get, the faster it flies!)
Just curious , how any of you guys started out on this machine, and what did you use it for? Myself I got one when it was fairly new, and immediately started "coding" in basic, which evolved into machinecode using the Edna cartrigde (had some others I don't remember the name of). I was also into music and a little graphics, but my real interrest for graphics didn't come until I got the Amiga 500.
Similar trajectory here. Started with a basic C64 without disk drive, on a TV. Did some Basic - no choice really ;) - and later machine code without a proper assembler: work it out on paper, poke data numbers into some free memory, SYS 49152 and pray it won't crash... some numbers I'll never forget, LOL! I coded cellular automata, mandelbrot fractals, a weird 'music' program and even a primitive text editor. Hard to imagine that Microsoft wrote Commodore Basic - the only thing that hinted at that was the irritation factor ;)
Then the brilliant Amiga 500... had some incredible fun with Amos, Deluxe Paint etc etc. AmigaBasic was a bummer.
After that, the worst buy of my life... an Amiga4000/030. A few weeks later Commodore went bankrupt. But I got Real3d 1.4 and during the first few days was completely immersed in it, lost track of time, forgot important appointments etc ;) and hooked ever since.
So, it's not really off-topic, after all Real3d was born on the Amiga!
Yes, I'm still lurking around, but haven't had the oppurtunity to do anything "real" in ages. Regards Karl R
Hope you'll get back to it soon, my 2 cts, Mark H
