Thanks for the feedback, we thought about the LDAP Connector, but it's not what 
we want.

Authentication in our case is handled by a different component, externally to 
magnolia - a customer-wide SSO solution handles the user's login.
So our use-case is more along the lines of having to accept an incoming request 
as "pre-authenticated", extract the user-information from the request, and 
match it to a magnolia user, creating the user if necessary. The user never 
sees magnolia's login screen.

I solved this with a custom Login-Handler paired with a custom (extended) JAAS 
module.

Do you really need to do this? We use the Magnolia LDAP Connector (EE), which 
lets our users login without having to create them in Magnolia upfront:
