I remember that I had to have a password a blank password did not work for me when I tried this out. I am not sure if that is the cause of your problem you mentioned in your email, but I do remember that I had to setup a user with a password.

Any ideas? Or shall I just start over. One thing though, I'm using mysql root user and no password (network is disabled). Maybe I need to put in a password? I'm pretty much using the default magnolia 3.0.2 and tomcat from the Magnolia SF site. I've only modified it so that magnoliaPublic is ROOT and setup virtual hosts (which worked before I made the mysql changes).
