I'm running Midgard on a potato box. You have to install several packages,
especially the development-parts of glib and zlib. Also the expat XML
library of potato isn't new enough. I compiled it by hand, but you could
try to use the sid package, which works fine.
For the build process itself make sure that you have this packages
installed:
autoconf
automake
libtool
file
