Most of the time I could use the Debian packages. You have to watch out
for two things though: Most of the time you need both the library itself
and the -devel (or -dev) package with the Headerfiles. In addition you
often have to explicitly tell php to activate a certain extension with
--with-zlib for example. If he can't find it try --with-zlib=/usr.
