I know it's strange but I'm almost sure it was libmysqlclient.so.6 (yes: an 
ending "6"!). Frankly, I neither can understand what is going on my machine 
nor explain it to you... :-(

Well, I have MySQL 4.X on my machines and I think that all the currently 
available sources and binaries of Midgard are built againt MySQL 4.X (on 
Fedora Core 2 and Debian Sarge MySQL 4.X is the standard install, I think).

Many thanks for you kind help. Before abusing of your kindness, let me try to 
install Midgard from source on my brand new Fedora Core 2. I did not try this 
yet and I'm confident it should work.
