It finds the owncloud calendar just fine but it won't display the
contacts in the phone.

acal as far as I know is for the CalDAV protocol only (which is concerned with accessing/syncing your calendar). For contacts you need something syncing contacts, i.e. using the CardDAV protocol. For example the CardDAV app as suggested by Peter.

As for your hostname issue: Could it be that you haven't set your domain name in the "Common Name" (CN) part of the certficate? This is usually what is causing such issues. Even with a self-signed certificate, at least the name specified in the Common Name should match the domain name you are using for accessing your server.

Cardav sync free beta works for me.  Caldav sync is for calendars; for
contacts you need carddav sync.
