Do link catalogues still > exist? I doubt that really is a statement about hierarchies themselves. To me this sounds more like an issue with having to use a hierarchy you are not familiar with. Thinking into the other direction: when you save files into your home directory, did you ever create a subdirectory? Why? Why did you not spill all files just in there in a big mess and user your systems full text search or whatever search engine?
