YV: I have the opposite.  Running an old VM on my Mac (Jaguar still there)
with no problems.  Brand new Linux Slackware 9.1, with problem.
 

as I mentioned already: with the Old VM on OS X it worked! it seems to 
be an issue of  the JVM upgrade!
