I appreciate that we have had (part of) this discussion before on this list,
but I don’t think it has run its course yet.

Frank, I don’t quite understand what you mean with the above response (what
has importing Word docs to do with column alignment? Importing Word docs has
been working for a long time).

Comparing OOo to MSO I believe that with the exception of Base, we have at
least a one to one fit (and IMHO more than that in favour of OOo). I haven't
used Word, Excel and PowerPoint for many months now, as OOo has offered me
an equally good (and often far more elegant) solution for the right "price"
and with incredible support. The latter two something MS by its very nature
will never be able to offer.

However, unless one is conversant with VB, scripting, macros and all that,
there is no way that you can develop simple, but yet reasonably powerful
application like you can in Access. The same goes for data manipulation. The
fact that the Base Query designer allows for Select statements only, vs.
Access's equivalent allowing as well for Update, Append, Delete, Make Table
and CrossTab queries makes a huge difference to quick data manipulation. I
have Base on top of MySQL and far to often I have to resort to the MySQL
Query Browser to get things done, because Base won't allow me. And that is a
step back from the ease of use of Access. And as much as I love OOo, I use
it as a productivity tool in the process of generating income and I just
can't afford "taking steps backward".

Secondly the availability in Access of a pre-defined Macro library that can
be easily used in the On Event tab, allows for some pretty powerful form
design without having to know macro development per se.

Until Base gets on the same level as Access for these features I will not be
able to switch off MSO.

Looking forward to being proven wrong :-)

Cheers
Gert
