Hi Drew, all,
Just another thought about our how-the-direction-is-directed discussion.
If it is done on discuss@, is it (fairly) sure that people from
QA/development read, participate, take notice?
I haven't seen much examples in the past two years of subjects on that
list, that were promoted in the product's direction.
Maybe I just missed them.
Know idea about who watches that list or how ideas move from it to the
larger project on my part, but in this specific case Uwe Fisher mentions
that the feedback he receives will be compiled and forwarded to the dba
developers. ( although I would have expected him to have said - the
product management team - perhaps just a case of symantics. ) Already
folks have reported back with results from a reposting of his survey on
the French and German list servers. I have just finished putting a group
of user poll threads on the Base board at OOoForum and set the polls to
run for 10 days. When someone asks directly for input like this it would
be foolish not to help gather the information, it certainly doesn't take
a great deal of time or effort.
But on the other hand, QA-ers/developers will be careful in spending
their valuable time. And since there are lengthy discussions on broad
and long side-paths, or about minuscule details, now and then, that
might easilly discourage them....
So: does it (searching for improvements in the process and
communication) have impact to discuss further on discuss@ :-)
I suppose it would make sense to at least broach the subject on a main
board and see where it leads. There is also the fact that from what I
can see of the products development processes and architecture it is
unlikely that any new feature can be requested and delivered without the
sign off and efforts of individuals in multiple project teams. So it may
be better to start in a more general list.
Frank, in, I think his first message in this thread, went out of his way
to mention the relationship between ( or seperation might be a better
term ) SUN and OO.o. With an aside to who is paying the lions share of
the bills. Good points indeed. But truth be said this isn't really any
different than a commercial product's vendor and their clients. We users
can often be myopic in our view, and the vendor has to always make
choices about what can realistically be implemented.
Anyhow, my bilogical clock tells me it is time to find food...so bye for
now.
