In a manner of speaking I suppose it is.
For example the Pentaho report engine has a function
TotalGroupSumFunction, this function would allow the value to be in the
header. But the current SRB does not have this function. Whether it and
the others are coming in a later version I don't know.
in fact, as the summing function is declared in the group, I'd have
expected that it would behave identically in the group header and
group footer which for me are both identicals in terms of grouping
behavior, the difference being where the content is displayed. This
(header or footer of a group), in my opinion, should not interfere
with the underlying data structure.
(in the same way for example that I would expect to be able to put a
auto generated page number either in the page header or page footer)
You can insert a page number and page count when you select from the men
"Insert->PageNumber"

Well, I'm not sure here's the place for such thinkings.
(You might ask : who would ever place a subtotal in the group header
in the first place ?)
Lots of people that I know.
to be honest, I don't use databases in a professional environment,
it's more of a hobby for me to get involved in the base module. So, I
couldn't tell you how theses things are done with the same way Alex
did.
But i'm sure some people will one day try to put a subtotal in the group header.
