Do you have dir-index set on the filesystem?

I believe I did. I'm going to rebuild the disk with ext3. In the
end, I may come back to reiserfs, as it seems faster (~2.7G in batches
which altogether took about 1.75 hours--bear in mind this is a 250GB
7200RPM LaCie over USB-2 from a 4200RPM laptop hd, so it's probably
not the fastest transfer rate).

Well, it should keep them only for files > 128kB. Do you have so many of them?
So many that it makes a real difference?

I'm not so sure. I'll have to take a look when I test it again.

If you find out what the problem is, I'd be very interested - that should go
into the FAQ.

Sounds good. I'll see what I can find.

Cheers,

Phil
