SOLVED!

Thanks to all of you for patiently talking this through with me until I found
the problem.

It was this--

First I put my fonts into /usr/share/fonts/truetype and when that didn't work,
I put them into home/.fonts. I remembered that just now and deleted them from
the former to see what would happen. And it solved the problem. Now I have them
all recognized and working.

But it's odd that the malfunction was so selective about which fonts not to set
up properly.
