That's fine if you're using Gnome, but not all of us do. Here's what I'd do: first, I'd use shred to scramble everything on the drive. Next, use Gparted to remove all partitions on the drive, re-partition it with one huge partition and format it to some format other than what you'd been using and zero that out. Yes, it's a long, slow process, but since you're doing it at home, you can either start it at bed time or just before you leave for work.
