I would not count on that message meaning ANYTHING other that the
manufacturer does not want to debug 3rd party batteries.

Could well be.  I will see what the seller says to my email.

This is the manufacturers way of pushing you to their typically more
expensive batteries.

I paid $55 for this Sanyo and just found what looks like a genuine Lenovo for $52.  I asked that seller if what they are selling is what the picture shows.

And I installed a new battery a few years ago, and the first few times
it would not charge to 100% (stopped well short) and then for no
obvious reason it started charging full.

Well I will see.  It will be off for a couple days, shortly.  I do want more charge when I am on Amtrak from Toledo to Trenton next weekend (they do have AC, but..).

And no telling how the electronics tells the %, if it is doing some
sort of charge/current counting then putting in a larger battery may
confuse the software until it re-calibrates with the new battery.

Sensor app acpi report the battery at  35730 with max of 72360.  So the 50% MAY be based on actual charge value vs max.

Grumble.
