My WORD documents became OpenOffice.org files when I installed OO 1.1.4 .
I thought all was working with OpenOffice.org 1.1.4 and I was able to add to my
former WORD documents from web pages. But tonight while
trying to open one of my created documents (formerly
all created in MS WORD....after few seconds I got a large gray page but no
text page within it- just a blue band at top with the file name on it and the
three little boxes on right _ | | X. were frozen so I couldn't close the file.
I waited for it to open but it didn't, then came a gray box saying ERROR REPORT which I was told to SEND (or Not)
I entered what program I was in and what happened and sent it on. Afterward a smaller box appeared saying "An unrecoverable error has occurred. All modified files have been saved and can probably be recovered at program restart"
I tied opening same file afterwards, same thing happend. Then
I tried with another by highlighting it, holding down SHIFT, and clicking
on "OPEN WITH" OpenOffice, but that again resulted in the 3rd ERROR REPORT.

I'm panicking now...because I fear I may have lost access to all my WORD
documents which were transformed into OO.org when I installed it. Can I transform
this back to MS WORD to see if I can still read what I've saved....and how
do I do that....If I uninstall OpenOffice, will that get me back the MS
WORD? I really want OpenOffice because the links won't work in MS WORD now.

Thanks for any help you can give me,
Joan

First, don't panic :) It sounds as though OpenOffice just took over the file associations, not converted the actual documents. Do the files still have .doc after the filename, or has this been changed to .sxw?
Did you try using Open With... and selecting MS Word? If so, did it work or not?

I suspect a dodgy installation of OpenOffice is your problem, but someone else can probably give you more information - I'm a relative newcomer :)

That's exactly what happened. The file associations changed, nothing more. Though I though the option for OOo to take over file associations had been taken out of the intaller because we kept getting people who didn't pay attention to what they were clicking and kept screwing this very thing up.

Here's what you do. Find a file in the file explorer, hold "shift" and right-click on one of your files, then select "open with." In the window that comes up, select Word, and make sure the "always open with this program" box is checked; then hit ok.

Repeat the steps for other MS Office Doc types (only once for each type)...
