I'm no equation expert, but the version of OOo is pretty old. 

I tried :      a size 20 b
and got a normally sized 'a' and a large 'b' (font size 20 -
approximately).  I'm using 1.1.2 on winxp.

It may be something that has been fixed since the release your using -
recommend and upgrade and then another try. If problem persists reply
to the list.
