     This double line is a border. Look at 
Tools > AutoCorrect/AutoFormat > Options.
The thirteenth choice is "Apply Border". If that is checked, it produces 
the results you got. You want to uncheck it.
     To remove it, place the cursor just above the double line at the 
left margin. Right click, and select Paragraph from the context menu. 
Go to the Borders tab.  In the list below "Style", there is a list of 
line widths beginning with "None". Click "None" to highlight it, and 
click "OK". That should remove the line.
