It's not true at all.
Don't rule out the BSD family (FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, etc.) OOo runs just fine on my FreeBSD laptop.
And I shouldn't rule out Solaris or Mac OS X. Both are non Microsoft systems...
But Linux is probably the best way to go for a novice (no, Mac are evil propietary systems, bad for novices or experts).
