Hi Brian,
Your Word docs have not been changed, only the association of the doc file extension. When you installed OpenOffice, there was a dialogue asking if you wanted to open Word, Excel and PowerPoint files with OpenOffice. You must have checked all the boxes. This changed the relationship of the doc extension from Word to OOo. To change it back, shift-right click a doc file and select 'Open With'. Choose Microsoft Word from the list you'll be presented with. You will still be able to open the doc files using OOo's 'file / open' dialogue. Your files will remain in Word format as long as you don't save them in openoffice format.

Dear Sir

I have been using Microsoft Word 2000 to transcribe historical documents for a University archive. To date, about 6000 are 'in the bag'. Today, thinking that OpenOffice.org 1.1.x could be a complimentary word processing programme, I downloaded it and had a look at what it can do. I saw that I could still open my MS Word documents. I chose a trivial one and it opened as an OpenOffice document. I changed it slightly and went to see if the original MS Word document contained the same alteration. I was surprised to find that the MS Word document opened as an OpenOffice text document and that all of my MS Word 2000 documents now open as OpenOffice text documents. I do not know how to revert back to MS Word format.

I would like to be able to change from the MS Office Word format to the OpenOffice text document format, and back again. Is it possible to do that, or am I now stuck with the OpenOffice format ?

The OpenOffice.org programme appears to be very good. I like it and I am sure that I will get used to it without too much hassle, but the ability to easily alternate between it and MS Word 2000 would be a bonus.

The HELP section appears to be very large and comprehensive. Perhaps the answer to my problem is there, but it will take me ages to digest and understand it, and I should be spending my time transcribing my documents.

So, can I change from MS Word format to OpenOffice text format, and back again ? Your advice will be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Yours sincerely,
