My solution works for me, I am sure that if I set up a page to the dimentions of a c4 envelope, 1/3 a4 roughly, it would work just as well, it's about trial and error, and working out how to do things,
While it would be nice if OOo handled this more transparently, I also figure it takes a little bit of fooling around to create an envelope template for the printer I use, and then simply use that. I suppose if I wanted to get really adventuresome, I'd play with swapping the current menu function to instead simply open a blank document based on my envelope template, but I'm not really sure it's worth the trouble.
And, to be honest, when I asked a colleage who uses Microsoft Word why she didn't print envelopes from inside the word processor, her answer was that it "never seemed to work" for her (though her printer is identical to mine). Now, I happen to know that Word really can print those envelopes <grin>, but my point is that envelope printing seems confusing to many users no matter how well a program may be at handling the issue. Reality is that envelope handling is an incredibly printer dependent function, and is complicated even more by the variations in envelope sizes in use.
That said, I will admit that OOo's "out of the box" envelope results are best described as strange <grin>. I can get it to work if I make sure I go through and insure that both OOo and my printer driver understand what I'm trying to do, but I suspect most less sophisticated users would give up long before finding where the "paper size" detail is hidden in the Windows Postscript printer driver I'm using. What appears confusing is that you've already told OOo you want, say, a number 10 envelope--so it's not clear to the user why that doesn't produce a valid printout on a #10 envelope.
