Are you running Gnome or KDE?

2.4.1 shouldn't have anything to do with it.

Some have reported that leftover beta installs can create some issues,
so I'd recommend that you use Synaptic (search on 'ooo' & you'll find
the ooobasis etc files) to completely remove everything OOo 3.0 - use
"Mark for complete removal" (leave your Ubuntu'ized OOo 2.4.1 alone),
remove the /opt/folders and rename the ~/.openoffice.org folder. Then
reinstall via dpkg (make sure your permissions are correct on the .deb's
(they should all be 0644 -rw-r--r--) using 'sudo dkpg -i *.deb'.
