Thank you Jan.
Unfortunately, the spreadsheet is a csv file that is generated from a
database, so I can't add the apostrophe because the data is derived
mechanistically from the database and that data does not have a leading
apostrophe (and shouldn't have one).
Also, I can't set the cell format before I open it, since the file is
generated. I need to open it and then do something to make it display
correctly.
Any other suggestions?
Kyle

Hello,
you have at least two possibilities, how to do it.
1) write the value like this: '3.23.01
- the mark ' is important, it tels calc that input is text value
2) prior to writting set format the cell to text

I have thousands of cells whose actual content is something like this:
"3.23.01".
Calf insists on seeing this as a Date and displaying it in whatever date
format I have.
If I set the cell format to Text, it now displays it as a number: 36973
(probably the number of days since some time or other.)
I want and need to see the actual text: "3.23.01". (It is not a date, in
fact is is a software version.)
So, how to turn off Calc's automatic treatment of date-like numbers as date
and just show me the actual text?
Many thanks in advance,
Kyle
