Thank you. The page you mention lists two possible workarounds:
1) prepend an apostrophe to numbers
2) Format each cell as text
Neither of these are acceptable as solutions.
well, these two workarounds are the only I know for Calc. For tables in
Writer you can disable the automatic number recognition (Tools - Options
- OOo Writer - Table), but not for Calc.
